We decided to book this Hostel after reading previous reviews and also bearing in mind that we only had a small budget to work with. It was the middle of August during high season and we are a family with a 4-year old son and pregnant wife. We were under no illusions that this was only a one-star establishment and did not expect much. However, we were pleased overall. Essentially, the accommodation is, for my mind, similar to a British Bed and Breakfast Guest House (with en-suite) and covers all the essentials needed for a budget holiday.

The room is attended to every day and the linen and towels, although a little threadbare, are fresh and clean. The bathroom was similarly clean and as good as seen in some 3/4 star hotels that we have stayed in. We also had a small balcony and our room was placed at the rear of the property away from the street and was relatively quiet at nightime.

Breakfast was ample and was made up of hot bacon and fried eggs, if you wanted it, or a continental choice of ham, cheese, bread, jam, fruit juice etc. The coffee was from a machine, but we quite enjoyed it!!

The Hostel is five minutes walk from Cala Gran Beach which is a small cove with lovely golden sand and carm clear water - ideal for our little boy. There are plenty of cafes, bars and restaraunts nearby. The staff at the Hostel seemed to consist of only two women, Antonia, who works at the reception (this is found in the travel agents next door) and the lady who prepares breakfast and also cleans the rooms. Both these ladies were friendly, helpful and kind to our little boy.

Drawbacks (that did not spoil our enjoyment) are that there is no lift, so stairs may have to be climbed. The beds are not the best in the world and there is no air conditioning. The third bed was a camp bed.

Tips: There was no plug in the sink or bath, so take one with you if you want to wash out or rinse any beach clothes. They do have fans to hire at 3 euros a day - get one of these if you don't want to be too hot at nightime. Take some entertainment for your kids (if you have any) as there is no TV or radio or anything else for them to do in the hostel.

Overall, a good experience for us and we would consider going again if not for the fact that next time my wife will have a baby and the accommodation is more suited for young singles, couples and families with older kids.

Top Tip: Good beach five minutes away. Cala Gran. Other small beaches within walking distance Cala Esmaralda and Cala Ferraira. Daily boat trips on Glass-bottomed catamaran from Cala Gran, very good. Great Value Cafe near Cala Gran Beach called 'Cafeteria Las Palmas' (I think). We had one really poor meal at a place called something like 'Jimmy and Floras' I would avoid this one if you can it was opposite a sort of ' Kontiki' style bar/restaraunt not far from the Hostel.

I decided to go on holiday on my own, at the age of 21 some people thought I was making a mistake.
I still went through it, and upon arriving safely from the transfer from Palma to San Fransisco Hostal in Cala D'or I was made to feel very much at home, not only from the lady at the reception but the cleaner also.
I felt really at home and I will definately be going back in september, again, possibly on my own.

Top Tip: Everything in Cala Dor is beautiful. the Cala Gran and Esmerelda beaches are excellent.

After getting a cab from Palma to Cala d'Or the driver had difficulty in finding the entrance. It was not particularly obvious and we ended up spotting it only after getting out and walking up and down the street oputselves. The Hostal San Francisco was a very basic hotel but suited us fine as a place to stay overnight on arrival from England before heading out again. The beds were small singles and the third bed in the triple was only a camp bed, not long enought for anyone who was taller than about 5' 6". Wery basic but perfect for what we wanted.

Top Tip: Close to a few bars and right in the center of town. Easy access to shopping but requires a walk of about 5 - 10 minutes to the beach.
