Catalonia Salamanca Plaza Hotel

“ Top Tip: We loved being close to the Plaza Major and found lots of great eating places there and in the surrounding streets. The Plaza Major was my husband's favourite square in all of Spain.

“ We have stayed at 3 other hotels in Salamanca; this was the 2nd time that we have stayed at the Catalonia. We have found it to be the best in almost all departments inc. proximity to the centre (Playa Major). The reception staff, in particular, are extremely helpful and obliging. The rooms, hotel generally, and facilities are very clean and well presented, and the rooms are cleaned promptly and to a high standard. The only critiscm we would have regards the breakfast.
The first time we stayed, it was excellent. This time, the staff were slightly unfriendly and, with one exception (see below), seemed very keen to get guests through the breakfast asap in order to clear up. Only one young man who, also worked behind the bar, ironically only managed breakfast on the one morning when there was a large party from Cosmos in. Despite this and being on his own, he was very approachable and pleasant. As regards the actual breakfast on offer, the second morning we noticed that there was a much reduced choice, with no fruit or cakes. This obviously prompted complaints from others, as, as we were leaving, a woman who was presumebly in charge, came into the room and gave the staff present a real telling off, in a very loud voice and in a typical animated manner. At 10 euros per person, it was not good value.
With the exception of breakfast, we would certainly recommend this hotel.

“ Top Tip: Salamanca is off the main tourist trail, and there is not a lot of English spoken. The Spanish is pure Castillian. It is relatively small, but has many excellent restaurants, museums, and other places of interest, all within easy walking distance. A walk by the river is very pleasant. The Art Deco museum by the cathedrals is a must. There are several bars and restaurants around the square, but, for excellent food, value for money (much cheaper than the square), a walk of 10 minutes takes you to the Van Dyke area, which has the best tapas by far.
