The hotel is set in lovely surroundings but given that it was refurbished a few years ago, I would say that, for a 4 star hotel, there is room for improvement and a little more attention to detail. For example, sitting in the Jacobean Great Hall opposite the fireplace, there was a stack of newspapers which had been left in the fireplace with a broom atop, the whole weekend. Some of the staff could have been a little smarter. There were areas of debris and general neglect outside the hotel where windows had been left open in the loos and corridors and and it was apparent that nobody was keeping those areas maintained.
The food was generally not that great and definitely not good value for the money being charged. I ordered Welsh Rarebit and could hardly spot the cheese on the big hunks of bread lying on the plate - if I hadn't been so darned hungry I would have returned it!
Also, I had assumed the Great Hall was a place for guests to relax, read a newspaper etc., surely not for appropriate for staff and visitors to hold rather strident meetings to discuss seminars etc, aren't there meeting rooms or an office in the hotel for that?
“ Top Tip: Yes for cyclists there is the 'Greenway' (?) cycle route which starts near the Fox Pub in Willian Village just a few minutes around the corner from the hotel. However, print your own map as the hotel's copy was not easy to follow but it is a non taxing 13 and 1/2 mile ride around the outskirts of Letchworth which is a nice spacious town with wide streets and some lovely gracious houses.
