The Red Lion Hotel

“ Just back from a brilliant long weekend in Northumberland. Stayed at The Red Lion, Wooler. Great place to stay, great location for Northunbria coast and Cheviot Hills, friendly staff and awesome food.
We got a friendly welcome, found our room spacious, comfortable with a large flat screen TV on the wall. The large free standing bath was a godsend after getting back from spending 5 hours walking from Bamburgh to Seahouses and back - total decadence, but so nice! The wall decorations with birch twigs and lights odd, yet fitted in so well.
The breakfasts were everything you needed and more to set you up for a busy day. From the chef's home made ketchup on your cooked breakfast, to as much tea and toast as you can manage. Stayed in on the last night - feet wouldn't cope anymore with all the stunning walks. The evening meal was stunning. The scallop starter with the homemade black pudding has to be tried. There were lots of main course choices, specials as well of equally high standard with superb local produce used throughout. The steak was to die for (sorry all you veggies!). The cheese plate we had was great and the wine list varied and reasonably priced. The staff serving were friendly, enthusiastic and were happy to make our stay really enjoyable. All this was going on with a busy hotel with travellers, local folk and family groups all enjoying themselves.
Would we go back, definitely. Northumberland is a hidden jewel that deserves all the adjectives used and the Red Lion was the perfect location offering a friendly and welcoming base. The all the folk there, thanks for a lovely weekend.

OK weren't there any bad points. Well yes, just one and not a large at that either. The towels were hand towels rather than bath towels, and yes we could probably have asked for some. But it didn't stop us having a fabulous time!

“ Top Tip: Try walking from Bamburgh to Sea Houses (and back again) - along the beach of course! The wind clears your head and the sounds and sights awesome. The views of Holy Island to the north, and the Farne Islands to the south stunning.
