“ The reception when we arrived was poor. We were quickly shown to the annex where the room was merely pointed out to us as "up the stairs and you'll see the room up there". The room was not en suite, but we had to discover the bathrooms for ourselves. Carpets in the hall, stairs and room were nylon based, which made them a little slippery underfoot. The beds had duvets, but no sheet between the duvet and the bed, which made it feel as if you could be sleeping between covers that had been used by someone the night previous. Curtains were ill fitting and thin. The kettle had a smell to it of something akin to sweaty armpits, after it had boiled. The bathroom was in poor condition, peeling paint and wallpaper. No hot water from the shower and the drain was blocked which caused the shower tray to fill up. There was a lack of shelving in the bathroom, which meant that all bathing kit either went on the floor or on the toilet cistern lid.
We rang ahead to say we would be late arriving (about 21h30). The person who answered the phone referred to the Hylands as a hotel. It is most certainly a Guest House only, and whatever the star rating is, it needs to be reviewed downwards.
Saving grace, the breakfast was good and the staff were of a different caliber than we experienced at the reception the previous evening.
