Having spent New Year in another 4* hotel (the Eden Manor Amsterdam Manor Hotel, Linnaeusstraat, A'dam), I feel in a better position to make comparisons with the Copthorne Hotel Effingham Gatwick.
I found it hard to understand how this hotel merited 4 stars. The room we stayed in was badly in need of some TLC: the carpet was marked, furniture was bleached by hot cups & tired-looking, wallpaper was torn & the bathroom had cracked & blown tiles and was generally in need of redecoration. Breakfast was very OK.
On the plus side, staff were uniformly pleasant & helpful & the room had been thoroughly cleaned.
I wonder what overseas visitors passing through Gatwick must make of a hotel like this?
I wouldn't stay there again.
“ Top Tip: The Hedgehog pub round the corner from the hotel in Effingham Road was friendly enough & had a good selection of real ales. Had I not had other plans I would have been happy to have given their menu a try.

“ Very tired, very dated. Do check what is going on in the Conference Centre during your stay. We arrived into a heaving mass of fans queueing to enter a 'Cage Fight' Hardly what we expected to find at check in. We requested a room as far away as possible - which they provided. We arrived for breakfast at 9.30 am (served from 8 -12) to find it totally not as described. The menu shows lots of types of cereal, describes different types of bread, including croissants. Cornflakes, rice krispies and white sliced bread, were actually what was on offer. The queue for toast was a joke, each few slices that were brought out were gone in the blink of an eye. The staff seemed to be surprised that they had guests for breakfast!
