Me and my wife stayed at the Bell for two nights while visiting Oxford recently and couldn’t have been more disappointed given the very positive reviews posted from other guests, and the main reason we chose to make a reservation. Be advised that although this Boutique Hotel is only about 8 miles from Oxford it is still very isolated and not within easy walking distance of any other amenities. The nearest newsagent is 3 miles away in the larger village of Kidlington. Whilst the restaurant and surrounding bar area are undeniably very attractively laid out and beautifully candle lit in the evening, we found the food good but not amazing given the prices charged. The wine and bar drinks were also over priced in our opinion with wine starting at £18. We stayed in room 6 which was a ground floor room on the roadside with a public drinking/smoking area immediately outside. Although clean with plenty of hot water and efficient temperature control via a large radiator, the room had virtually no sound proofing and was probably the noisiest room we have ever stayed in. Light but constant traffic noise and people entering and leaving the building and using the stairs was very noticeable, and on our second night we were treated to a group of other guests chatting/ giggling between midnight and 1am outside the window (I can't imagine how bad it is in the warmer months when the hotel is busier and the bedroom windows are open.) You could also hear every footstep from the room above and after being kept awake by the late drinkers we were then woken by the upstairs occupants clomping around at five in the morning presumably getting ready to leave early.
On a positive note we found the staff employed at the Bell to be very friendly and helpful both in reception and the restaurant but on checking out we weren’t asked if we had enjoyed our stay or encouraged to return which was a shame. We didn’t come across anybody from the owners/management team while we were there unfortunately so it wasn’t possible to discuss these issues directly with them.

Top Tip: Bicester Village designer outlet is close by and well worth a visit as is the pretty Village of Woodstock which has a good selection of pubs and hotels.

A very smart and well appointed room, although we found it slightly 'clinical'. It might have been a little more homely and friendly.
