Excellent

Check-in date:

Lovely clean, well maintained and well staffed Hotel. Staff are very friendly and attentive. Breakfast was excellent. Steam room, pool and hot tub were very relaxing, it can get a little busy at certain times. Alcoholic drinks at the bar very expensive and once we knew this we didn't drink there again. Rooms are very well sized, beds and pillows extremely comfortable. Back of hotel overlooks the racecourse. Lovely gardens and view over the racecourse from the bar and dining room. I would definitely stay here again.

Top Tip: Taxis are easily available into town and taxi drivers know York very very well. Expect to pay £5 to £7 each taxi time into York and the same back. Best eateries on Fossgate, Masons bar & Bistro was excellent. You need to book in advance at most on here unless it's early as they are smaller than most places and very popular. Piccolino's on Bridge Street on the river was one of the best meals I've ever had.

The first receptionist we spoke to seemed in a bad mood. The room was tired with a cracked sink and dirt on the bathroom floor. There was rust on the metal work around the bath. The rooms are situated in a rabbit warren and the lift was at the end of all this.
Room service was quick and efficient but before i finished I was ordered to reception to pay for it, when i have always paid for food at the end of my stay.

Top Tip: Didn't venture out.

Check-in date:

We stayed here in Feb 2012 and had a decent break. The staff are very friendly and the hotel is clean and tidy. The pool is fairly small and as such, can get busy at 'key' times (ie early evening with the kids). Breakfast is of the 'all you can eat' / 'serve yourself' cooked breakfast, or there is fruit and cereals if you're feeling healthy. The hotel is not within walking distance of York town centre, but it is on a bus route with fast access in to town (an all day family ticket is approx £8). With the cost of parking in town, it's definitely worth leaving the car at the hotel and getting the bus in to town.

Top Tip: Avoid 'Bettys' teashops in York. Overpriced and overrated. There are plenty of other options in the town which are better, cheaper and don't require a long queue before you get a table.
