For royal palaces, fairy tale castles, ancient treasures, Renaissance and contemporary art, beautiful parks and excellent nightlife. Plus, apparently they have some sort of small town local beer festival each year called Oktoberfest?!

Although beer features heavily in most descriptions of Munich's attractions, the city does also have some truly spectacular sight that you won’t need beer goggles to appreciate. Munich’s rich architectural heart can be found at Marienplatz which has a cluster of beautiful museums, ornate churches and friendly market stalls. It is dominated by the twin domes of the Gothic masterpiece, the splendid 15th century Church of our Lady (Frauenkirche). You can even climb the tower from April to September to get a bird’s eye view of this incredible city.

The famous food halls, Viktualienmarkt, is at the end of the Mareinplatz. Make sure you take lunch here. The Munich Residence is another must see. It has been home to royalty since the 1570s and has a huge art collection of which the highlight is the Antiquarium which is the largest Renaissance hall in northern Europe. There are also lots of hunting lodges, stately homes and palaces many with Rocco architecture. The new kid on Munich’s arty block is the modern Art museum, the Pinakothek der Moderne which has works by Picasso, Magritte and Germany’s own modernist wunderkind, Max Beckmann.

Munich's English Garden is a calm if eclectic oasis away from the city. In true contrasting Munchen style it has a Japanese Tea House and a Chinese Tower beer garden plus a river, a boating lake, a natural wave pool used by the local surfers, boat hire and the odd nude sunbather. And if you get time, head out to the idyllic Bavarian countryside and the story book castle of King Ludwig II at Neuschwanstein.
