Because it truly is a city like no other. This wonderful city on water, sometimes called the Venice of the North, is the capital of Scandinavia and is spread across 14 islands peppered with pretty pastel coloured houses. Stockholm is a city for strolling through and exploring on leisurely boat trips. The old town, Gamla Stan, is an island maze of narrow, cobbled streets with little shops and cafés, the Royal Palace and the Great Church.( www.royalcourt.se) At Stortorget Square is the Nobel museum which commemorates the massacre of 1520 when the Danes killed 90 noblemen in the 'Stockholm Bloodbath'. You can even visit the old Viking town of Birka. The Royal park (Royal Djurgården park) is on its own island and has open lands and forests, plus lots of museums including the Skansen open air museum and zoo, the 17th century battleship Vasa which has been restored after 333 years underwater, two art houses, a Jewish theatre, childrens’ museums and the Nordic museum. And, the local amusement park, The Tivoli, has the highest free fall in Europe. The houses, offices and shops reflect that simple elegant Scandinavian style that is so effective, yet so hard to describe. Check out the Söder area for trendy, creative and alternative shops or the City area for more conventional fare.

Where to go in Stockholm
Nightlife in Stockholm Stockholm’s nightlife is full on and there is lots of it. There are restaurants serving food from around the world plus lots serving local cuisine; and pubs, bars, clubs, cabaret and theatre. Music clubs and night clubs for every taste can be found in the city centre. In the Södermalm district just south of the city centre, there is a much younger and more bohemian vibe. Also the Vasastan and Kungsholmen areas have restaurants and entertainment. The bigger discos and clubs can be found in the Stureplan and Kungsgatanarea.
Gay and Lesbian Stockholm. The rainbow flag flies in many of Stockholm’s central districts. But most gay bars and clubs are found in the Södermalm district and in Gamla Stan, Stockholm’s Old Town. In Sodermalm Side Track, SM/leather clubs LASH (for women) and SLM (for men) can be found. While in the Old Town, Torget is a popular gay bar. For clubbers, Connection club is held every Friday and Saturday at Cattelin's eatery; and the male-dominated Lino club is just west of the Old Town and four bars, three dance-floors and a big outdoor terrace. On Sundays there are tea parties and dancing on the old steamship Patricia which offers great views across Stockholm. Europride 2008 will run from Jul 28 - Aug 3 2008 but you need to book your accommodation and flights early.
When is the best time to visit Stockholm is lovely all year round and each season has its own benefits. The summer has jazz and Europride festivals, the autumn has the beer and whisky festival and winter has the wonderful Christmas markets; but for winter wonders, be prepared to wrap up.
