Holidays to Kavros
Crete has a distinctly independent feel to it compared to mainland Greece, and there's nowhere better to experience it than the beach resorts of Kavros. With sandy beaches in front of you, look left to the town of Georgioupolis with its pretty church and marina and right to the old Venetian city of Rethymnon. It’s a great base for exploring the region – if you can drag yourself off the sands and away from the hospitality of the beach tavernas that is.
This wide bank of sand has a watersports centre and a handful of tavernas along the coast road behind it.
Stretching east for 1.5km, the sands here are covered with loungers and parasols which are free for anyone to use.
This old town was built in 1204 after the Venetian conquest of Crete and features Renaissance-style architecture.
The Rimondi Fountain
In Rethymnon’s old town, this fountain was built in 1626, running water from 3 lions’ heads into the basins.
This park features a petting zoo, games rooms, mini golf and kiddie cars for hours of family entertainment.
Visit Kournas Lake
The only freshwater lake in Crete and a great spot for a picnic or a walk. Keen twitchers will like the birdlife here.
You guessed it – seafood! Along the marina, the fish restaurants take their stock straight from the boats each night.
Throughout Kavros, traditional tavernas make dinner a relaxed affair as you share various of plates over 2-3 hours.
Head to Pasarela Street – it’s lined with late night bars and clubs and attracts partygoers in their 20s and 30s.
A British ‘local’
