Holidays to Isla Mujeres
This Mexican island is located in the stunning Caribbean Sea, 13km off the coast of the resort of Cancun on Mexico’s east coast. It’s generally a quieter and more affordable option than on the mainland, and still offers plenty of upscale hotels, restaurants and family friendly beaches. Its surrounding coral reefs, meanwhile, offer some of the world’s best diving and snorkelling.
The island’s main beach offers plenty of loungers and its warm shallow waters are safe for swimming.
Set on the south of the island, this beach offers sweeping white sand and shallow waters backed by lush palm trees.
Temple of Ixchel
At the southern tip of the island are some ruins of a Mayan temple built for the Mayan Goddess of the Moon.
The path to the Temple of Ixchel leads you through a field filled with several modern art exhibits.
Surrounded by coral reefs, Isla Mujeres is a diving paradise and there are plenty of companies offering lessons.
A good option if you’re not into diving, snorkelling still offers you the chance to see parts of the coral reef.
The island’s restaurants specialise in fresh seafood, from garlic shrimps, fried whole fish and octopus to soup.
This light fish dish consists of seafood marinated in lemon or lime juice, garlic and seasonings.
Head to palm tree filled Playa Lancheros in the evening to join one of its vibrant beach parties until late.
Late nights in Cancun
Take a ferry to the mainland for a bigger choice of late night bars and clubs playing dance music into the early hours.
