Holidays to Karterados
A pretty little Greek village on the isle of Santorini, just 2 kilometres from the capital Fira, this is the home of the traditional Greek honeymoon. Its black sands and whitewashed towns are picture postcard beauty for young and old lovers alike. Karterados itself may be quiet, but it's the perfect escape, and close enough to beaches and city life to keep you in the loop.
Karterados beach (Exo Gialos)
A sheltered beach with impressive, if slightly foreboding, dark pebble sand. The area gives a sense of calm isolation.
A well organised family beach, its darker sands are lined with shops, cafes, restaurants and sports facilities.
Agios Nikolaos Monastery
Rising out of the rock almost organically, this monastery usually has a monk in residence but is open to tourists.
Museum of Prehistoric Thera
A small museum that contains a golden ibex from 1,700 BC and some fine early examples of neolithic pottery.
Photographers will love the picturesque track linking Oia to Imerovigli. They journey takes less than 3 hours.
Take up an offer from the local vineyard to learn about their history and production methods and sample their wines too.
For a small village, there's a nice range of traditional tavernas serving Greek classics, like salads or lamb dishes.
Aside from the tavernas there are also local pizzerias and grills, the latter serving a collection of local meats.
This wouldn't be the key reason to visit town. The best places to drink are the local restaurants and tavernas.
Once a bustling backpackers stop, its beach bars are still the place to be for a slightly younger crowd.
