Ras Al Khaimah, or ‘RAK’ for short, is an up-and-coming emirate. The fourth largest of the seven emirates that make up the UAE, Ras Al Khaimah is not as well-known as the incredibly popular Dubai or Abu Dhabi, but that doesn’t mean it should be ignored.
The rising emirate is just over an hour from Dubai airport, but flights into Ras Al Khaimah are available with Qatar Airways, with prices starting from just over £300. The airport is located only 15 minutes from the beachfront hotels, so you can be off the plane and relaxing at your resort in no time!
1) It’s more affordable
That’s right, your money can go further in this emirate, with the cost of accommodation, transport, food and drink typically coming in 20-30% more affordable than in the pricier neighbours to the South. So if you’re on a budget, or looking for an excuse to splash out that little bit extra on a special treat, Ras Al Khaimah can be better for your bank balance.
2) It has great beaches
Ras Al Khaimah has arguably the best beaches in the UAE, with 40 miles of coastline boasting natural beaches of white sand sloping into the warm, turquoise sea. It’s actually a popular weekend spot for other Emiratis, and we all know that when you see the locals enjoying somewhere, be it a beach, restaurant or a bar – it’s usually a glowing endorsement!
3) It’s the most tranquil
You know what else is good about the beaches? They’re not crowded, and this is a theme you’ll find throughout Ras Al Khaimah. With less people and less traffic, it’s the perfect place for a tranquil getaway. And if you do miss the hustle and bustle of a busy city, Dubai is just an hour away.
4) It’s diverse
RAK is the most mountainous emirate, with a backdrop that includes Jabal Al Jais, the tallest mountain in the United Arab Emirates. It’s also situated near the terracotta desert, so if you’re feeling adventurous you can look for a thrill dune bashing, mountain climbing, horse riding or mountain biking, to name a few of the adrenaline-fueled activities on offer. You might also enjoy spending a night under the stars in a Bedouin camp, for a feel of what life was like in a bygone era.
5) It has heritage
Where Dubai and Abu Dhabi have towering skyscrapers, Ras Al Khaimah is a more authentic Arabian experience, with the richest collection of historical sites in all the emirates. Steeped in more than 5,000 years of history found in archaeological sites such as Dhayah Fort or Sheba’s Palace, you’ll be fascinated by this area’s heritage.
We think Ras Al Khaimah is a great alternative for a week or two away to the United Arab Emirates. You could even combine a break here with a few days in Dubai or Abu Dhabi, thanks to them being so close by. Make sure you visit soon to make the most of the peace and quiet, RAK is growing in popularity so it’s sure to be busier in years to come!
