Hooray, spring has finally sprung! In a previous post I looked at beautiful destinations in Autumn, so I thought why not do one for spring? This Friday Five will take a look at destinations around the world that truly do bloom (excuse the pun) in this season. If you’re in the mood for striking colours, bursts of sunshine and fresh flowers, read on.
Santorini is beautiful at any time of year and spring is no exception. If you chose to visit the Greek islands at this time of year, you’ll benefit from quieter resorts and cheaper prices. Of course that’s not the only incentive to visit, the jaw dropping coastline is complemented with blossoming flowers, meaning there are bright splashes of colour decorating the coast. The temperatures in April and May are a comfortable 18 degrees, so you can happily walk around in a t-shirt, admiring the beautiful landscape in all its glory.
I mentioned Paris as one of the best autumn destinations to visit, but it’s equally as pretty in spring. You’ll spot purple blossom trees dotted around the city, which will give you postcard perfect photos. The gardens of Le Jardin Sauvage Saint-Vincent and Jardin du Luxemberg are worth visiting at this time of year due to their excellent flower gardens and green spaces, perfect for a picnic (if it’s warm enough). Terrace bars and cafes will also open up their outdoor seating, meaning you can enjoy a beverage and delicious pastries in the comfort of the spring sunshine.
Keukenhof Park, Holland
This is the second largest flower garden in the world and is home to one of the best tulip festivals in the world. The park can be found in a small town called Lisse, which is just a 40 min drive from Amsterdam. Every year there is a total of 7 million flower bulbs in the show and there is an estimated 800,000 visitors during the 8 weeks the gardens are open. The best time to visit the show is in April, where you can catch the flowers in their full bloom. This year’s theme in Van Gogh and there will be a huge tulip plateau which is inspired by the former artist’s work.
Another city destination that is at its finest in spring is Barcelona. Like Paris it is a popular destination all year round, but in spring you get to enjoy the city with milder weather and of course beautiful scenery. Park Guell is particularly stunning in the spring sun with dotted greenery to complement the mosaic patterns of the architecture. In May the festival of flowers takes place in Girona, which is just outside of the city and worth visiting, especially since entry is free.
Skagit Valley, Washington, USA
This is another big tulip festival that happens in Skagit Valley, which is a month long celebration of tulips. There are 200 million tulip bulbs planted every year in anticipation of the festival and as you can see from the photo, it’s certainly worth it. The fields of tulips really are a spectacle and are laid out in an impressive rainbow effect. The festival is only open throughout April so you are limited to when you can visit, but it is worth it!
Where have you been in spring that’s been amazing?
