With Valentine’s Day in just over a couple of weeks’ time, love is in the air. Are you planning anything special for a loved one? A romantic getaway might just be the ultimate gesture to show that special someone what they really mean, and where else to take them than on a short break to one of the most romantic cities in the world – Rome. We’ve put together a list of five of the must-see romantic sights in Rome.
1) Spanish Steps
The name might be misleading, but the Spanish Steps are a must visit spot in the heart of Rome. Climb the iconic 135 steps, first made famous in the 1953 film Roman Holiday, for a spellbinding view over the rooftops of the Eternal City. It’s at the foot of these steps though, that you can find Keats-Shelley House, a museum dedicated to the two famous English Romantic poets, who both died tragically young in Italy.
2) Trevi Fountain
There’s a legend that tossing a coin into this fountain will ensure you will one day return to Rome – apparently a popular wish amongst visitors as it rakes in on average €3000 a day! Visit the fountain in the evening to avoid the crowds and enjoy the added bonus of it being lit up, the perfect backdrop for a holiday smooch – how romantic!
3) Piazza Navona
This bustling piazza features not one, not two, but three impressive fountains! The most famous being the Fontana dei Quattro Fiumi, or ‘Fountain of Four Rivers’, which depicts the four major rivers Nile, Ganges, Danube and Plate. Sit outside one of the many restaurants to take in the buzz of this exciting street, or maybe get a portrait painted by one of the many local street artists!
4) Campo di Fiori
Just round the corner from Piazza Navona, Campo di Fiori is a huge open market that you could spend hours wandering around in. Campo di Fiori translates literally from Italian is “field of flowers”, but it’s more than just flowers you can find, with meats, cheeses, gelato and clothing. It’s lined with bars and restaurants so you can sit in soak up the atmosphere.
An absolute must see and one of the most impressive sights in Rome, the Pantheon is surely going to be on your itinerary when visiting. Steeped with history, this impressive and beautiful structure is one of the best-preserved Ancient Roman buildings. Not only is entry free, but you’ll likely be serenaded by street musicians outside the Pantheon, the perfect start to a romantic evening in this incredible city.
