Let’s Get Flip-Flop Ready

Flip Flops

Are you ready to embrace the summer and slip your feet into a fantastic pair of flip-flops? As we celebrated International Flip-Flop Day in June, it’s official – it’s now time to set your toes free! So, dig out your favourite pair of flip-flops from the bottom of the wardrobe (or treat yourself to some new ones, it’s the perfect excuse to do so) and read on to find out a little bit more about why flip-flops are so loved around the world…

Flip-flops have a long history

Flip-flops are popular with sun-kissed surfers, Californian locals and Brazilian beach-goers, so you’d be forgiven for thinking that they’re a modern fashion statement – but you’d be wrong!

Flip-flops (or ‘thongs’, ‘jandals’ or ‘plakkies’ as they’re called around the world) have actually existed for thousands of years, and have been worn for as long as anyone can remember.

The ancient Egyptians loved flip-flops, crafting them from materials such as leather and papyrus leaves. Ancient murals have even shown trendy Egyptians wearing them as long ago as 4000BC!

Elsewhere in the world, ancient communities have made flip-flops out of wood, yucca plants and rice straw, and have been worn on regular rotation by ancient Africans, Indians, South Americans, Romans and Greeks.

So how have they evolved into the kind of shoes that we wear to the beach or keep in our handbags for comfortable, blister-free dancing at wedding receptions?

Well, World War Two saw American soldiers bringing Japanese ‘zories’ with them, turning flip-flops into the casual western footwear of choice (redesigned in plastics with bright colours) that we know and love today. The rest, as they say, is history.

Will you be wearing your flip-flops this summer…?

If you’re jetting off on holiday to beautiful sandy beaches or lounging by the pool under the Mediterranean sun, doubtless you’ll be bringing your flip-flops! They’re perfect if you’ve decided to have a laid back beach holiday and are ideal if you want to gently brush the sand from the soles of your feet, or pad across the hotel lobby after a dip in the pool.

However, they’re also the perfect choice of footwear to wear closer to home, helping to keep your feet cool while you walk in the park, work in the office or simply chill in your back garden!

At Travel Republic, we’re huge fans of them; in fact, we can think of at least 26 reasons why we love flip-flops. So here’s to the humble flip-flop, the must-have footwear item for summer. If you want to get your feet flip-flop ready, read our fact-packed infographic below!
