The magic of Malta

Malta is something of a hidden gem, very popular with lots of our customers but still a destination many don’t know much about. It’s only a three hour flight from the UK, with flights available from many regional airports. We’re going to highlight some of the very good reasons to consider Malta next time you’re planning a holiday.

An island in the middle of the Mediterranean, Malta is 60 miles south of Sicily and enjoys a typically Mediterranean climate, very similar to that of southern Italy.

Malta’s calendar is bursting with events to entertain all ages. March is a great month to visit if you like to party, with Carnival Week running from 4th March to 8th March. Visitors can enjoy and take part in the traditional carnival, complete with extravagant costumes and stunning and very colourful decorated floats. Paceville, Malta’s nightlife capital, is the place to head to if you want to party late into the night.

Anyone interested in messing about on the water will enjoy the afternoon regatta on Freedom Day, the 31st March, to mark the closure of the last military base in 1979 and the Rolex Middle Sea race in October.

Other events to watch out for include numerous processions and local celebrations at Easter, the Fireworks Festival around the Grand Harbour in April, the Malta International Jazz Festival and the Farsons Great Beer Festival both in July, the Malta International Airshow in September and the Malta Military Tattoo in October. If you’re a music lover both James Blunt and Fatboy Slim are performing in Malta this April.

For scuba diving fans, Malta offers great year round diving. The dive sites are varied and interesting – divers can dive three different wrecks, from three different wars, in one day.

To find out what is going on during the year take a look at the Malta events calendar on the Visit Malta website. You’ll notice that the list of highlighted events in the brochure for this year is 44 pages long, giving you a good indication of just how much is going on!

We hope we’ve given you a hint of what a great destination Malta is. In our next post we’ll give you the inside track on hotels in Malta.
