Nothing beats lounging around by the pool on a summer holiday, but there’s something about a winter city break that’s unbeatable. From admiring the architecture to enjoying local events, rekindling romance with your loved one to gearing up for a little Christmas shopping, a city break is the perfect option this time of year.
We’ve rounded up a list of wonderful winter breaks, with something for everyone.
Nestled in South West England, Bath is a stunning spa city and designated World Heritage Site. Days can be spent wandering the historic streets, before ducking into one of the tea rooms for a quintessential afternoon tea. And of course no trip here is complete without visiting the famous Roman Baths, Britain’s original thermal spa.
In winter, Bath hosts its Christmas market, where the city is transformed with more than 180 wooden chalets lining the streets, offering locally produced crafts and foods.
For a romantic getaway, Tallinn is a Gothic fairy tale come true. The capital of Estonia, this walled city on the Baltic Sea is the country’s cultural hub, with contrasts of modern and medieval.
Walk through the cobbled Old Town where streets lined with candles light up the darkest time of year. In winter, you can skate on the outdoor ice rink before warming up in a cosy café with a coffee or cup of mulled wine, before strolling through the Christmas market for boutique Estonian handicrafts.
3. New York
It’s almost cliche suggesting New York for a winter break, but it’s famous for a good reason!
Wrap up and stroll through the iconic Central Park with a classic cup of joe; it may be colder this time of year, but the sky is still a stunning blue. If you decide to visit to see in the New Year, watch the fireworks from Battery Park and stay up to watch the sun rise over this incredible city from Brooklyn Bridge.
Tired of the cold? Not every winter escape has to be chilly!
Dubai offers an eccentric mix of winter sun, luxury shopping and vertigo-inducing architecture; the Burj Khalifa towers over this coastal metropolis at a staggering 829.8m – more than twice as tall as the Shard in London.
It’s a great destination for families too, with Wild Wadi Water Park offering over 30 rides and attractions to keep everyone entertained.
Voted as one of the top ten winter trips by National Geographic, Dublin is the perfect winter city break.
Less than an hour’s flight from London, you can explore Dublin on foot and really make the most of a short break. From the cobbled streets of Temple Bar to the astonishing Phoenix Park, there’s plenty Dublin has to offer.
End the day with a trip to the Guinness Storehouse, and warm up with a pint on the rooftop bar!
