About Budapest

A city that gets the senses tingling from the moment you set foot in it, Budapest is an ideal city break for travelers of all types.

With the mighty Danube River splitting it into the two halves of Buda and Pest, you’ll discover magnificent architecture and fashionable shops and bars blending in perfect harmony. The stunning Chain Bridge joins the sides together and a walk along this will provide a special view of the majestic capital. Of course a visit to one of Budapest’s ancient thermal spas is a must do on any visit, the perfect way to wind down after a day of exploring.

The Buda Castle is a great place to discover the history on offer and with a huge collection of excellent museums, galleries and exhibitions you won’t be short of things to do. After a long day of exploring you’ll need to be replenished and the famous Hungarian food will do just that. Make sure you enjoy a well-earned ale in one of the famous ‘ruin pubs’ of Budapest.

When To Go

Like many European cities, Budapest has long and warm summers that run from April through to the end of September. Temperatures can reach into the 30s in the peak months of July and August and these are also the busiest, with many of the main attractions putting on extra shows and opening longer. The city can be just as beautiful in the winter though, when the crisp mornings provide a different perspective on the architecture and river.

Sightseeing and must-sees

  • Conquer the castle
Buda Castle provides the main backdrop for the city and is a great place to go with kids. The interactive tour will keep them entertained for hours so that you can immerse yourself in the history of the place.
  • Cruise down the Danube
The majestic river splits the city into its two distinctive halves and the best way to see them both is from the water. Organised tours run all day in the summer and the views are spectacular.
  • Experience the baths
Known as the ‘City of Baths’ you can’t go there and not check them out. In a land of thermal springs the traditional baths from the 16th and 17th centuries still exist today and the Gellert Baths in the middle of the city are the most magnificent.
  • Have a drink in the Szimpla Kert bar
This quirky and alternative bar is full of hidden rooms and areas where you can enjoy a local beer or ice-cold cocktail. Voted the third best bar in the world by travellers, it was the first ‘ruin pub’, setting a trend that the rest of the city followed.
  • Try the local cuisine
The restaurant scene in Budapest is excellent and ever growing. Settle in for the evening and enjoy the local goulash or stew with a signature nokedii dish while you wash it down with some delightful local wine.
