About Florence

Florence is a true beauty, once the cradle of the renaissance and today considered a cultural and historic gem. For a city small enough that you can walk from Santa Maria Novella in the West to Piazza Santa Croce in the East in a matter of minutes, Florence is so packed full of historic and artistic treasures that even if you returned year after year you still wouldn’t be able to experience them all.

Florence was a pioneer of Western civilization. Now the capital of Tuscany, the city continues to be a link to Italy’s past and a magnet to the outside world. From the Basilica of San Miniato al Monte and the Uffizi gallery, to listening to performances at St Mark’s English Church, Florence is a treat for the eyes and ears. If you’re a foodie you won’t be disappointed with the Florentine steak and fine wine.

When To Go

Spring will let you see the city in its best light, although a city as beautiful as Florence looks stunning in any light. While the late-Spring/Summer will offer you the best weather, this is also when the crowds are at their busiest. September to November may not be as warm, but you’ll have more room to explore and enjoy some fantastic seasonal Tuscan cuisine.

Sightseeing and must-sees

  • Get some fresh air in Boboli Garden, Pitti Palace
A breathtaking view of Florence awaits you in the beautiful Boboli gardens, across from the Ponte Vecchio behind the Pitti Palace. The palace itself was home to the Medici grand dukes of Tuscany, and the garden has an extensive collection of sculptures.
  • Pay a visit to the Uffizi Gallery
One of the most famous art galleries in the world, and without a doubt the greatest collection of Renaissance art, the Uffizi gallery is the place to see masterpieces from Botticelli, Leonardo da Vinci, Michelangelo and Titian.
  • See the Palazzo Vecchio, Piazza della Signoria
This massive fortress-palace overlooks the Piazza della Signoria. It is the town hall of the city and has been the political centre of the city since the middle ages. It boasts an impressive clock-tower and there are a number of cafes and restaurants in the square itself.
  • Visit the iconic Duomo
Located right in the historic heart of Florence, Il Duomo dominates both the city’s skyline and Florence’s image as a Renaissance wonder. It’s the third largest church in the world based on nave size, and its enormous 37,000-tonne dome can be seen across the city.
