Virginia Hotel

Kalithea, Rhodes, Greece

4 Star Hotel

Hotel Virginia was build at 1988 (and renovated in 2000, 2003 and 2004) with the goal to combine the European standards, the famous Greek hospitality and the family environment. Over the years we have been expanded to a 32000 square meters of property, 95 rooms, 59 studios, 16 apartments, 20 suites and 10 maisonettes (in total 200 rooms) but we have accomplished our goal and have managed to provide all the comforts that our clients need.

Location/Architecture: Our hotel is placed on a quiet location, 5 Km from Rhodes city but not far from the center of Koskinou (a village near by). The architecture of the hotel follows the thought of a neighbourhood in the country side, 10 small buildings with no more than 3 floors each, a mini market, a restaurant with an outdoor terrace, a bar, 5 pools, a pool bar - snack bar and  the reception all covered by a green veil of grass, trees, flowers and a waterfall that ends up to an artificial lake with fishes.

We arrived at 22:45 so 15 minutes before the on complex shop shut which was a good job as there was no provision for food after our journey even though it is classed as all inclusive. \So we had to make do with crisps for our evening meal. The standard of the food and drink was very poor. The food mainly was very dissapointing and the variety on offer poor. The snack bar was just the previous evenings leftover pasta and aslad dishes with some vegetables. There were no normal snacks such as sandwhiches/burgers/pizzas/chips etc.
The all inclusive drinks are equally as poor. The spirits were not nice, only Gin, Vodka, Ouzo and Rum and to be honest you really couldn't tell them apart, just all cheap clear spirits and the mixers not much better, The beer was poor and of the few english guests we there, they all agreed they'd had poorly stomachs from what they thought was the beer. The hygene in the dining rooms is shocking!!! there is an indoor eating are, but it's too hot in there so we ate either of the 2 outside dining areas, OK as long as you don't mind the stray dogs wandering around. I was OK with this as I don't mind animals, but a few people were displeased. What I found more disgusting was the cleaning habits of the table clearer. He didn't clear the tables very quickly, and I started to just clear an empty table my self when we needed one, I noticed he had a cloth he used to clean the tables which he rinsed in a empty ice cream tub of what I thought was soapy water, until one day I went to use the cloth as our table had been left in a mess, the water was not soapy but cold and covered in a film of scum and dead flies, he continued to use that cloth to wipe his top of his bin then another rinse in the dirty tub of water then the table and so on...I don't know how the hotel has not had severe problems with stomach upsets.
Another problem is that not only do you have to queue for your food and put it on your dirty table, you then have to join another queue to get a drink. At least at meal times, you would expect a self service or waiter service for drinks.
The other major problem is there is no entertainment, and there is very little around the hotel, about 20 minutes to a small set of bars and shops. The bus to Rhodes town is close but it gets very full !
The hotel advertises in it's own pamphet that you're given on checking in that rooms are services 6 days a week. RUBBISH, our bin was emptied for 3 days but nothing else, on the 4th I had to ask for clean towels as they had not been replaced since we'd arrived, the reception could only provide me with 2 clean towels between 4 of us...the beds were not made until strangely our penultimate day, so we slept made beds with clean linen on our last night, I doubt the beds would have been changed again ready for the new guests.
The only good points about the hotel is that it is close to a beach, if you're OK with a hill to climb back to the hotel. Also the car hire is not overpriced, we didn't hire from the hotel as they had no availability, but the hire place up the road was great and a similar price. If you can you need to hire a car, as Rhodes is lovely this hotel is just a NO NO !!!!
Top Tip: There is a great bar with a lovely garden not far from the hotel where the pizzas are great, we ate out as often as we could afford to as although, we'd paid for all inclusive there is no way we could have eaten at the hotel all week. Also Rhodes town and Lindo are must do's either by car or boat go and excape the Virginia for a few hours. Also we had a great day at the water park, 22 Euro an Adult 15 Euro a child to get in, but once in not to dear and good drinks and food, loads of sunbeds and great fun slides etc. Not far from Faliraki so we doubled our day in the water park with a trip into the night life on the night...again only possible because we had the car...

I had a lovely stay at the Virginia hotel with extended family in July/August 2014. I found the hotel staff to be friendly and the food excellent. Both my boy 2 and 7 found more than pizza and chips to tempt them for all meals. There is no evening entertainment at the hotel, apart from a short kids disco most evenings. Rodos is a taxi journey away cost about 10 euros if you want to get out to eat or dance. The children's play areas are very good. I would recommend requesting a room in the newer part for the hotel. The hotel staff were happy to provide me with a small pan and cups so that I could make a cup of tea first thing, and the on site shop was well provisioned. The beach is close by but down a steep hill - although I had a buggy with us the walk was not too bad. I highly recommend the caravan café point ( first one as you get to the beach) for a decent cup of coffee! There is no cash point on site, the nearest one being at the Sun King hotel further up the beach, where they have a mini market that sells fruit as well which the on site shop did not. The reception staff will exchange sterling cash for euro's but cannot provide euro's through a debit card transaction. The pools were nice but we spent the majority of our days on the beach where you can hire a sunbed for 4 euros per day.
Top Tip: I highly recommend the caravan café point ( first one as you get to the beach) for a decent cup of coffee!
I was told that a taxi to the airport would have cost about 28 euros. Which given our night time arrival time I wish I had thought to use as the shared transfer took about an hour and a half because we were the last drop. Better on the way back though 45 mins as we were last pick up.

We stayed in the older part of the hotel which was quieter in the evenings and better when you have kids. Staff friendly and helpful, was clean but a little dated in some area's.
No entertainment in evenings .
Taxis on Island are expensive, car hire much cheaper option.

Good hotel facilities, but room was too basic for a 4 star hotel (it was a Superior studio with kitchenette, maybe other rooms are better). Only 1 plug socket for 4 people, had to pay for air conditioning and very hard matresses. No hair dryer, no complementary drinks or kettle, no complimentary shower gel/shampoo. Apart from that very nice swimming pools with many sun lounges available. The all inclusive is only some drinks for free between meals. Nice beach opposite the hotel where you can do lots of water activities (jetski, banana boat, boat trips, etc). There isn't much entertainment in the hotel which is good if you're looking for a quiet, relaxed time. Very nice atmosphere with music by the bars and plenty of seating for a drink with friends. Great location between Faliraki and Rhodes town (worth visiting) only 15 min away with a good taxi service and local buses.
Top Tip: The choice between the swimming pools and the nearby beach.
Also there is a supermarket and some shops and restaurants walking distance from the hotel.
