Lovely setting with warm and friendly staff. The owner particularly was very helpful in sorting out rebooking our flights when the roads were closed due to snow.
Ideal location for viewing Northern Lights as away from town and other light sources - they even wake you up in the middle of the night (if you want them to) if the lights are showing.
Very good restaurant with well presented, varied choice and delicious food, both for help yourself breakfasts and al a carte evening meals.
Rooms comfy with jacuzzi bath plus shower and even hot tubs outside to keep warm while star gazing.
Excellent hotel overall.
Top Tip: Lots to do from the hotel as fairly central for places to visit in SW Iceland, especially if you hire a car - various waterfalls, black sandy beach about an hour away or a little more. For a longer drive, but well with it in the winter, is the glacial lagoon and further on the glacial ice caves - quite spectacular.

Our stay at the Ranga was everything I had hoped it would be! The staff were really friendly and helpful; nothing was too much trouble. The meals were divine, albeit expensive, though we had expected this as we had visited Iceland several years ago.
I am vegetarian, but I had lots of choice, and it was nice to be able to sample local veggie dishes, instead of the usual veggie fayre.

We were very grateful that we were woken up for the lights (as requested) twice during the night, or we would have missed them. the local scenery is breathtaking and dramatic and it is hard to take it all in.

I would really recommend the South coast tours. We had a guide to ourselves and we had an amazing day- glaciers, hidden waterfalls, off roading, driving through deep water and a small hike. Our guide was really helpful and informative. We learned so much that day and the time flew past!

I would thoroughly recommend a stay at the Ranga, especially for a special occasion. It was my husband's 60th birthday present and he loved it!
Top Tip: Guided tour- the guides can give you historical, cultural and geological information so that you get far more out of your trip.

The black beach and light house.Very blustery and dramatic cliff top views.

We hired a car which we used to take us from the airport to the hotel. This gave us the freedom to explore where and when we wanted along the main roads, but we needed a 4x4 for the off road, hence the guided trip.

Stunning hotel and location. The staff are all extremely attentive and polite and the attention to detail exactly right.
The food is stunning, especially the native Icelandic food, e.g. the lamb, and is beautifully cooked and prepared.
We spoke to Frederic, the owner and told him that his hotel is very similar in feel to Johansens (Conde Naste) recommended hotels in the UK. When you walk in, you feel like you're in your own home - very comfortable, warm and relaxed. We were also delighted to hear about the proposed astronomical observatory that's being opened at the hotel (with two 11" telescopes). The location is superb for astronomy and we had a good, if brief Northern Light show on our second night
Top Tip: The local tour company Southcoast Adventure does brilliant Super Jeep trips. We went to Þórsmörk (Thorsmork) on a day trip with an excellent guide named Marcus, whose knowledge and enthusiasm about Icelandic culture and geology made for a fascinating day, full of excitement and humour.

One of the best hotels I have ever stayed in.

It is in an amazing setting so quiet and no light pollution.

The staff went out of their way to make our stay very special. On arrival there was a problem with our room door locking and they moved us immediately. We also had problems with the four wheel drive we hired in that the battery would not hold charge so on our second morning the hotel owner got out his jump leads to start it.

All the staff were really friendly.

The food was fantastic. We were lucky enough to be there while the Christmas Buffet was taking place. I have never seen so much smoked salmon. Just incredible.

I cannot recommend Hotel Ranga enough.
