This was a last minute booking. There is not a great many hotels to choose from in the Workington area (of a good standard, ie 4* plus) when I looked at Travel republic I specifically looked at 4* plus. The Cumberland is advertised as a 4* and is also shown as having a rosete for its food.
Upon arriving the hotel has a adequate car parking (off street), but the hotel looks old and in need of repair from the outside.
When I entered the hotel I thought that I had gone back in time. Although very nicely decorated it was in the 70s style. It was decorated to look more like a home than a hotel. I found walking through the lounge area in order to get to the reception/room with a suitcase hard with all the furniture that had been dotted arround. When I booked in the owner dealt with me. I found her to be very polite and welcoming. One thing that I did find strange, I was asked to pay for my stay on booking in rather than on check out as is the norm.
Upon entering my room I found everything to be clean and tidy if not a little old fashioned. The owner had tried to modernise the room by adding a feature wall and a throw at the end of the bed, but you could tell the room had not changed much from the 70's. The bathroom was adaquate although again the tiles on the wall had seen better days, lime green (70s I think!!) But one thing in the bathrooms favour was the double size walk in shower that I had in my room.
The breakfast in the morning was Nicely cooked with good quality products, although you did only get sausage, bacon, egg and beans.
Another thing in the hotels favour was the check out time, 11am, which is good if you don't want to rush breakfast in order to meet the check out time.
Too sum up this hotel has been misleadingly advertised in my opinion. It is not a 4* standard. Would I stay here again? If I was travelling through maybe otherwise I would not.
