  • Staff very helpful and professional. Hotel very nice. Maybe think about a sign showing how the sink plugs work - we had to ring the reception for an explanation on how to unplug the sink!

  • Welcoming staff, easy check-in / out. Room was clean and well appointed layout of the room was different but worked, loved the headboard. Whilst no food was partaken of the menu appeared to offer a range of choice and prices to suit most pockets given the location of the hotel.

One of the most outstanding features of the Cumberland Hotel London is its substantial size; it has more than 1,000 rooms, four restaurants and bars including the The Brasserie Restaurant & The Carbon Bar.

This luxury London hotel is steeped in history and prides itself on its high levels of service and the comfort it offers as it seeks to ‘inspire, enthral and amaze’. The Cumberland Hotel London is part of the Guoman group of London hotels which also features The Charing Cross and The Tower and is set near to London’s Oxford Street shopping area, while Marble Arch is also nearby. The building itself came into existence towards the end of the 1920s and it began to usher in its guests from 1933 as the first hotel to have telephones in each room and private en suite bathrooms. King George V and Queen Mary were even in attendance for the venue’s grand opening ceremony.

Today, the hotel brings together an impressive style mixed with contemporary aspects, with sculptures and paintings dotted around the building, while the bedrooms and dining rooms are also modern in their design and furnishing. And all this right at the heart of London near to its array of other centrally placed hotels, as well as its numerous exciting attractions, places to visit and sights to see. The Cumberland Hotel is one of e-travelguide's most popular establishments in the heart of the nation's capital.

The hotel offers a complimentary Wi-Fi Internet access in all public areas and bedrooms for all guests.

Property characteristics of The Cumberland

  • 1019 bedrooms including mini suites, apartments and special access rooms
  • The hotel was built in 1930 and was reopened in 2004 after a total refurbishment
  • The Cumberland is a completely non-smoking hotel

Very Good

Check-in date:

I had five nights at The Cumberland. For me it is perfectly situated with Oxford Street to the left, Hyde Park opposite and through the park to Knightsbridge. Perfect for those who want to shop. Could not be closer to a tube station. The rooms where a good size for London and were very quiet considering the traffic around Marble Arch. My room was to the side and fourth floor so maybe that helped. Breakfast was no better nor worse than I expected from a buffet, for those wanting a full English it is available. For an extra charge you can have waiter service a la carte breakfast. All staff at breakfast very helpful. Staff in the Bar were a little slow but still very pleasant. It is fairly priced for London and because of its location I would stay there again.

Top Tip: Because of its proximity to the shops leave some room in your case!

Check-in date:

Upon arrival we had to wait 25 minutes in a queue to check-in, others had been waiting for an hour, even though I had booked on-line! - The staff were very polite. The hotel was very well presented and clean - the next day we had to wait another 20minutes in a queue for breakfast - the hotel management seriously needs to review their processes and the negative effect it has on customer experience ?

Check-in date:

The room was ok, but could have been better - for example the air conditioning from the outside corridor was very noisy and the room took a long time to warm up. The bathroom floor was very cold (not ideal at this time of year) and the shower door leaked.

However, the staff were very courteous and helpful and breakfast was very good. The hotel location, near to Marble Arch, made travel around London very easy.

Top Tip: Marble Arch tubestation is right next to the hotel, which is very handy.
