Squished in between the Pacific Ocean and San Francisco Bay, this West Coast gem’s packed with Insta-worthy views and big-name attractions like the Golden Gate Bridge. Plus, it boasts a chilled-out vibe and easygoing attitude that sets it apart from many other American cities. While it’s got its share of skyscrapers, much of San Francisco feels more small town than big city, which is very much part of its charm. The hipster Mission District is chockfull of murals and classic taquerias, Chinatown’s the biggest outside Asia, and the rainbow-coloured Castro’s known for its nightlife and vibrant LQBT scene. But it’s the waterfront that’s the true heart and soul of this city.
Who is it for?
History Buffs
San Francisco certainly doesn’t shy away from its past. Its American football team’s called the 49ers – in recognition of the 1849 gold rush which saw hoards of miners arrive from across the country – Mission Dolores in the Mission District dates back to 1776, and its famous cable cars have been in operation since the 1870s. There are age-old landmarks dotted across the city, but the most famous of all is Alcatraz Island, once home to the infamous prison. It’s open to visitors nearly every day of the year – if you’re feeling brave, why not sign up for one of the night tours?
Daytrippers
There’s absolutely tonnes to keep you occupied here but, if you do have time to spare, there are some amazing day trips to be enjoyed from San Francisco. Californian wine is world-famous and two of the state’s best very wine-producing regions – Sonoma and Napa Valley – are practically on the doorstep. If wine’s not your thing, though, you can always head to whale-watching hotspot Monterey instead. Or, if you fancy an overnight trip, Lake Tahoe and Yosemite National Park can each be reached in less than four hours.
Outdoor Adventurers
With no fewer than 43 peaks in and around the city, San Francisco’s full of natural highs. So, if you’re a fan of a hike, it’s a great place to strap on your walking boots. Muir Woods, just north of the city, is brimming with towering redwood trees and worth a visit for the Insta content alone. There are also countless parks and coastal trails – and a stroll over the Golden Gate Bridge is an absolute must. But hiking’s not the only activity to enjoy here. San Francisco’s waterfront location means kayaking, windsurfing, kiteboarding, swimming and surfing can all be added to your holiday checklist.
