Split has dramatic coastal mountains as a backdrop, lively nightlife and a history that has left its stunning mark - including a World Heritage site. Go island hopping down the Dalmatian Coast. <p>Plonked in the middle of the Adriatic Sea and the Dinaric Alps, Split’s bagged itself a postcard-worthy setting. But you’ll also find plenty of Insta-worthy views right in the centre. Between the swanky marina and the palm-dotted promenade, the city’s old town’s a labyrinth of cobblestone streets and delightful alleyways, packed with historic sites. But, while Split certainly goes heavy on ancient charm, that doesn’t mean it’s stuck in the past. As Croatia’s second-largest city, it’s got heaps going on. There’s an exciting foodie scene, some seriously hip bars, pulsating nightclubs and it’s even gained a reputation as the country’s unofficial pop music capital. Plus, in the summer months, you can let loose on the beach and dance until the sun comes up. </p><h4>Who is it for?</h4><h5>History Buffs</h5><p>Walking through Split’s historic centre is like going on a journey back in time. There are a whole bunch of crumbling ruins that’ll catch your eye, but the Diocletian’s Palace is the main attraction. Dating all the way back to the start of the fourth century, it’s UNESCO-approved and spreads its weight across almost half the old town. Once you’re done gawping at what is one of the most impressive Roman ruins around, head on over to the Archaeological Museum for an extra dose of culture.</p><h5>Beach Bums</h5><p>Don’t think Croatia holidays have to be a toss-up between cities and sand. Split’s enviable position on the Dalmatian Coast means it nails the whole urban beach thing – so you can enjoy the best of both worlds. There are a handful of sandy stretches dotted around the city, but Bačvice Beach wins the popularity contest. Its super central location means it gets a big thumbs up from both locals and tourists, and it keeps itself in such good nick it’s even earned a Blue Flag. </p><h5>Daytrippers</h5><p>If you feel like exploring beyond the city, you’ll be spoiled for choice when deciding where to go. You can escape the mainland completely and get a taste of island life by hopping on a boat from Split’s ferry port. From here, there are regular departures to Hvar, Brac and Vis. Alternatively, why not enjoy a tipple at the Putalj Winery, just half an hour outside the city? It’s been producing Zinfandel for a decade and now has several other grape varieties on its roster.</p>

Split

<p>This gorgeous island close to Split has a laidback vibe. Beach lovers will want to try Zlatni Rat or Bol town beach. There's blue, crystal-clear water and shingle shorelines.  The hilly countryside is great for hikers and bikers. The peaceful cemetery in Supertar with its unusual architecture and work by sculptor Ivan Rendic is worth a peek if you are nearby.</p><h4>Who is it for?</h4><h5>Families</h5><p>The town of Bol offers Segway tours and both adults and kids can try the high-rope walks in the adventure park.</p><h5>Thrill Seekers</h5><p>Watersports are popular on the island including kite surfing and diving.</p><h5>Culture Vultures</h5><p>Visit the impressive Blaca Monastery, a hermitage that was in use for more than 400 years.</p>

Brac Island

<p>Trogir was under Venetian rule from  1420 to 1797 and the influence can be seen in the city's architecture and culture. Around 27km from Split, the island is connected to the mainland via a bridge as well as to the green Isle of Ciova - which is a tourist resort. This makes it easy to combine culture with beach days and  watersports. Trogir

<p>Makarska is just a 90 minute journey down the coast from Split. The port has an old town at its heart with the newer hotels and resorts on the outskirts. Set at the foot of the Biokovo Mountain, it  is an ideal base if you want to do some hiking. If you prefer easier strolls then try the promenade instead.</p><h4>Who is it for?</h4><h5>Beach Lovers</h5><p>Makarska has pine edged beaches, peaceful bays and rocky coves.</p><h5>Culture Vultures</h5><p>Stroll through the large city square and see the Venetian fountain dating from 1775 with three carved lions heads spouting water in front of St Mark's Church.</p><h5>Nature Lovers</h5><p>A quirky attraction is the Shell Museum in the cloister of the Franciscan monastery.</p>
