Just down the road from the Pyramids of Giza in Saqqara, the Step Pyramid of Djoser is a must-visit. It was bult before the Great Pyramids and is widely known as Egypt’s first pyramid. It started off as a flat-topped, sloping structure, but soon evolved into a 60m-tall, six-layered pyramid, with each layer smaller than the next.

More of Egypt’s top pyramids are in Zawyet el-Aryan. Two of the pyramids here are unfinished but have centuries-old inscriptions in the rocks made in black and red ink. These inscriptions have clues as to who is buried in the pyramids, but Egyptologists and historians have been unable to correctly decipher it.

You can find other popular pyramid sites in Abu Rawash, Abusir, Dahshur, Mazghuna, Lisht, Meidum, Hawara, El Lahun, El-Kurru, Nuri.
