The mountain town and ski resort of Bansko is one of the Europe's best undiscovered winter sports destinations, and a UNESCO World Heritage site too. About an hour and a half from Sofia in the Piriin Mountains, its pistes rival those of the Alps at a fraction of the cost. Bansko's season lasts until April and is supplemented by 59 snow cannons, if required. The available ski classes, shops, bars and an ice rink make it a great all-rounder.
