Porto is an attractive port city, rising on a hill beside the Douro River. It is one of Europe’s oldest cities, which can be seen from the impressive Baroque architecture of its famous Sao Francisco church. And, of course, it’s also the home of Port wine. Charming and charismatic, there’s plenty to see and do in Porto. The city’s old town is called Ribeira and is a Unesco World Heritage Site. Its winding, cobbled streets, attractive plazas, churches and colourfully-tiled buildings offer plenty to admire and explore. The Ribeira waterfront also has plenty of cafes and restaurants with beautiful buildings rising up above them. Porto also offers plenty of natural attractions to appreciate. No trip is complete without a cruise along the river, underneath the city’s six bridges, while locals enjoy the Foz do Douro beach in the hot summer months. Another must-see is the Douro Valley, where you can sample the region’s famous wines with a trip to one of the many vineyards here.
