With a Mediterranean style climate, the weather in Santorini is one of the main attractions. The summer months of June, July and August are the hottest and also peak holiday season falls during this period. October and September can be exceptional times to visit as the weather remains warm with the towns less crowded.

The busy village of Fira is where you’ll find the best views of Santorini’s submerged volcano and plenty of souvenir shops, cafés and restaurants. Couples staying in the area should take the 10-minute boat ride to the islands of Nea Kameni and Palea Kameni, where they’ll find steaming hot underwater sulphur springs and therapeutic thermal mud. Hotels near Oia are also well suited to families and groups, as you can visit the Maritime Museum for a glimpse into the island’s history or tackle the 300 steps down to the port of Ammoudi. There you can take a boat across to one of Santorini’s smaller islands, Thirassia, where you can visit the striking Prophet Elias Monastery and the island’s highest point. Hotels near Akrotiri will give you access to the Red Beach, which gets its unique colouring from black and red volcanic rocks. The historic village is also home to the ruins of a 13th-century Venetian castle and the remains of an ancient Minoan settlement, which has been named Santorini’s Pompeii thanks to the many artefacts were found remarkably well preserved under volcanic ash. If you’re looking to get away from Santorini’s tourist hot-spots, check out hotels near Megalochori. The unspoilt traditional village’s narrow alleys and hilly location makes it a challenge to explore, but a worthwhile one that’s great for a relaxing romantic break.
