Excellent location - directly onto Kaimana Beach, which is a very popular beach with locals and families as it's much quieter than the busy tourist-filled beaches of Waikiki (which makes for a good night's sleep and more relaxing days). Kaimana Beach is protected by a reef so it has safe swimming for small children but there is also a channel out to a couple of breaks is you're a surfer (New Otani provides free locked surfboard storage next to the beach, even for longboards and large SUPs). The beach is very popular for long-distance swimmers too and you can swim to Waikiki beach along the outside of the reef. The hotel also backs onto Kapiolani Park, which is a huge public park with free tennis courts. It's possible to walk to Diamond Head from the hotel and it's only a pretty 15 minute stroll along the seafront to Waikiki where there are more restaurants, bars, shops and entertainment than you could ever want but New Otani is in a quiet area which is much better for relaxing and sleeping. If you're there to surf, you can walk to numerous breaks to the east (Diamond Head) and west (Waikiki) ranging from easy beginner spots to steep reef breaks. You can learn to surf in Waikiki. Our hotel room was gorgeous with a large lanai overlooking the beach and it had a good sized fridge for breakfast stuff and beers/wine. You have to request a coffee maker, which we did and it came with free coffee. The hotel itself doesn't have a lot to offer, which is why we knocked marks off our rating. There's a small bar and the restaurant has a very good reputation with tourists and locals alike, however it's very expensive.
